Training Tips
Follow these simple rules to make sure you benefit fully from using agility ladders:
Start slowly, and as you build confidence in the exercise speed up. It’s more important to have the correct technique than to sprint through the ladder. It’s not a race. Listen to your feet. You should be making the right sound and steps. Work to a rhythm. If you are struggling to grasp the rhythm, then include some word cues such as “in and out, in and out” or “1,2,3 – 1,2,3”. Use your arms. You may be unaware of what your arms are doing when you are concentrating on your feet. Ensure you are using your arms in a running motion as this will add balance and strength. Sprint at the end of the ladder or include a ball and some technique work. Combine various ladder exercises into this one practice, so you have to adjust your feet continually. Incorporate ladders into station/circuit work. Cones or balls can be used to recreate a ladder if one is not available to you.
EXAMPLE HOURLY PLAN:
20 min
Skills Practice
“Vision “: Players will have to look for their passes and pass the ball to moving targets. Move the practice on through progressions according tithe ability of the group. Split larger groups into smaller ability based groups with varied levels of challenge. Make sure there is plenty of space for the group to work in to keep the pressure low at this stage. Some players may boot the ball one touch in panic as soon as a defender is involved. Encourage composure and good technique
20 mins
Small-Sided Game
Make sure you have a generous size of pitch for the number of players. If you have an odd number, have one player play as neutral to create more passing opportunities for the team in possession. Praise examples of good passing technique and especially where the player gets their head up to observe the person receiving the pass.
10 mins
Cool down
Jogging and passing at random with emphasis on good technique. Static stretches. Review coaching points with Q&A and encourage lots of practice before next session
